Exploring parental concerns about children’s interactions in gated communities: a case study in Istanbul

ByE. Tezel

Situated around the Bosporus and joining the two continents, Asia and Europe, Istanbul is the

most densely populated industrial city of Turkey and exhibits all the major characteristics of

a metropolitan area. For decades, migration and overpopulation have been general problems

confronting the city. Because of high growth rates, neither local governments nor the central

government have been able to control the influx of migrants, most of whom settled illegally

on public land. As of today, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality not only has to cope with infra-

structure problems, but also has to find ways of solving the problem of the illegal occupations of

public land.
