The denial of class struggle by British Governments in their anti-union discourse (1978–2007)
Voloshinov wrote about language and Marxism well before critical discourse analysis (CDA)
was developed, but his Marxist approach to language brought him to the same conclusion
from which this study, deeply rooted in CDA, departs. In CDA terms, we might reword Voloshi-
nov’s proposition and affirm that class struggle is fought through discourse. Drawing on my pre-
vious work on anti-trade union discourse (Ortu, 2007), this article will focus on class conflict as
one of the most powerful, and consequently one of the most opposed, concepts instilled in the
history of thought by Karl Marx.
