ABSTRACT

Human autonomy is the central concept in Ramchandra Gandhi’s writings. His philosophical positions on communication, what is mystical, what is miraculous, and his theory about how language learning is possible, are all linked to this central concept of human freedom and autonomy. In these four cases, Gandhi wants to show that without exercising free and personal choices, one cannot meaningfully talk of all these issues. In the case of communication, this point is brought out with the help of the notion of addressing the other. In the case of mystical, he shows how certain statements cannot have opposites and yet we understand them. In explaining miracle, he indicates how something can come out of nothing in voluntary actions of physical, mental and perception, and lastly, human ability to go beyond what is taught is made use of as the foundation of language learning.
