ABSTRACT

Traditional metaphysics, especially of the revisionary or speculative kind, has been in disrepute ever since Hume and Kant. Modernity has ushered in a sceptical attitude towards the justification of mystifying metaphysical concepts, whether they are couched in Plato-style theory of Ideas, or displayed through the Vedantic drama of Māyā and Brahman. In the critical zeitgeist of contemporary philosophy, the place of metaphysical ideas is seriously contested on grounds of intelligibility and intellectual economy. Nonetheless, the ghost of metaphysics is hardly exorcised in the world of philosophy. Old ghosts reappear dressed in new clothes, as it were.
