Teacher education reform and challenges in Norway

ByElaine Munthe, Kari-Anne Svensen Malmo, Magne Rogne

Norway has a population of just below 4.7 million people who inhabit the spoonshaped country which is characterised by a long coastline with numerous fjords and mountains. To the east, the country borders on Sweden, Finland and Russia. Norway is the only one of five Nordic countries which is neither a member nor a candidate member of the European Union. Petroleum accounts for nearly half the country’s exports and 30% of state revenue (CIA World Factbook). Natural resources, and especially oil in recent years, have allowed the country to develop into one of the richest countries in the world, ranking fifth on gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.
