ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines my work with a sub-elite female fencing athlete. The agenda presented by the athlete concerned loss of concentration in important matches, however, it soon became evident that concentration disturbance was a consequence of dysfunctional emotions. The root of these emotions was traced back to irrational beliefs, which were mostly ego-related. Self-depreciation was the focus of my work with the client. REBT was the most focused and effective approach to work on these issues. At the same time, as an approach that comprises cognitive, emotive, and behavioral tools and techniques, REBT allowed the intervention to be comprehensive, so that the athlete would learn the psychological skills that would help strengthen concentration, focus, and resilience within her sport. The chapter describes the intervention plan and the focus from an REBT point of view. It also describes the challenges of the specific case in terms of resistance and how these were addressed.
