ABSTRACT

The chapter combines criminology and forensic science in a problem-solving approach to antiterrorism divided in five parts. The first part is a short presentation of problem oriented policing. The second argues that the specific contribution of criminologists is the analysis of words and that the forensic scientistsfocus on traces. In a third part, we present a brief autopsy of a terrorist attack. This leads to the argumentation that antiterrorism should target the conditions for the success of a terrorist attack and list those conditions. The last part analyses possibletactics ofantiterrorism: Detecting potential terrorists, infiltrating a terrorist cell, counterattacking, dismantlinga terrorist cell, intercepting communications, protecting sites exposed to a terrorist attack, controlling arms andmaintaining a distance between the terrorists and their targets.
