ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the destabilization of supervisory authority, the types of advice available online and the pressing need for savvy information use—a key digital literacy. It argues that supervisors have a role in helping students to navigate, choose and apply advice they find outside the supervisory relationship. Doctoral researchers have probably always looked beyond their supervisors, to friends, family and their peers. While supervisors might be concerned about the advice that students can consume, there are far more interesting developments just around the corner. Supervisors need to find out where their supervisees are getting their advice and support, not to police behaviour, but to verify that such resources are appropriate and helpful. Supervisors need support in order to keep up with the online advice on offer. Working with graduate schools and writing instructors, university librarians should provide regular updates about interesting software developments, indicate sound sources of online advice and support, and issue alerts about dodgy online doctoral dealers.
