ABSTRACT

A number of elements in the short parable 'Master Hui's Grave' that resonate with Existential Psychology. This chapter presents this parable, so that the reader can gather some of the nuances that are available from this short anecdote. Master Zhuang recognizes that his friendship and intellectual rivalry with Master Hui has been one of the most important relationships in his life. Friendship is important for one's psychological growth because a friend allows the confidence to show more and more of who a person is to another person. Existential Psychology encourages people to search for meaning and purpose in the way they are living their lives. Clients often come to therapy because these are two things that they cannot quite find yet. The Grave Parable suggests that struggling with difficult tasks, ideas, and matters is something that ultimately bears fruit. Existential therapy is ultimately about helping people find meaning, purpose, and values in their lives.
