ABSTRACT

Cybercrime has become one of the biggest challenges for law enforcement agencies. The ease with which it is committed, its invisibility and the disregard for geographical boundaries have put this crime in the list of the most dangerous and untraceable crimes. 1 Investigation, collection of evidence and prosecution are close to impossible. The growth of the Internet might have a lot of advantages, but it has brought with it the menace of untraceable and undetectable criminal activities. The European Commission explains that computer-related crimes are committed across the cyberspace and does not stop at the conventional state borders. 2 Technology gives the ability to loot and inflict harm upon the entire world with little risk of apprehension and allows for experimenting with new varieties of criminal endeavours. 3 Cybercrime is a global phenomenon, sometimes having its effect on the entire national or international community. Beginning from viruses that attack financial records or the stock market 4 to a false message that causes a nuclear reactor to shut off 5 or a dam to open 6 to a blackout of the air traffic control system that results in airplane crashes, 7 cybercrimes can cause severe and widespread economic or physical damage. 8
