ABSTRACT

Live supervision provides a unique opportunity for addressing the purposes of supervision whilst simultaneously making the supervisor’s knowledge and experience directly available to the supervisee’s clients. In order to mitigate the impact of anxiety through exposure to observation, it is argued that opportunities to participate in the supervisor’s work are beneficial as a precursor to live supervision of the supervisee. The chapter discusses the aims of this approach, managing responsibility for the work, minimising the impact of anxiety and practical options and formats for structuring sessions. Advantages and disadvantages are explored, as is what can go wrong when two or more people are working together and how to avoid such difficulties. Options for different roles and issues of leadership are explored.
