ABSTRACT

Physical dramaturgy provides the bridge between traditional dramaturgy and performance. Traditional dramaturgy shares the exciting intellectual knowledge of play-analysis, dramatic structure, and play-specific research with the cast and design team. This chapter develops a system of physical dramaturgy that first emerged with Metamorphosis in 2005. It creates a system of designing a rehearsal process that was specific for each production which often entails two full weeks of physical dramaturgical work with the actors. As much as the actors would have liked to do so, we did not discuss the specifics of any of these moments "The moment where Shen Te decides to offer the three visitors a place to spend the night." After deciding the moments, the chapter explores through a devising/improvisational process. Sometimes, the cast divided evenly between the moments with three to six actors choosing each one, allowing us to explore three to five moments at a time.
