ABSTRACT

The European multistate system is an important part of the equation that produced the modern state, modern democracy, and the modern market economy. But the fact of the matter is that the European state system is not as unique as the previous chapters – implicitly or explicitly – have made it out to be (see Møller 2014). This chapter discusses the multistate system that is most similar to the one later found in Europe: the Chinese state system in the period 656-221 BC (Hui 2001; 2004; 2005).
