ABSTRACT

Q methodology is a unique research methodology that combines quantitative and qualitative techniques with the purpose of uncovering latent discourses that exist within a population. Each individual adheres to a certain discourse; however, discourses can be complex and detailed in their extent and, when asked directly, an individual may find it very difficult to explain their world view, opinions and thoughts to a researcher, or may try to give the answer that they believe the researcher is looking for. Hence, Q methodology is a rigorous research methodology that is congruent with the philosophical principles of a person-centred approach. This chapter explores the relevance and rationale of Q methodology, explains how to apply the methodology and gives guidance on how to analyse the outcome.
