ABSTRACT

Academics are very fortunate because they essentially choose their own research topics. A strong attraction to a research theme indicates a likelihood of successful completion. That “attraction” is a culmination of all prior research-the skills and experience that have led to this career stage. That includes clarity about what constitutes an appropriate research topic and determining a suitable methodology. Both of these variables are driven to a large extent by the goal of avoiding anything that might be ethically problematic. The gaining of formal approval of one’s project by the employing institutions’ Human Participants’ Ethics Committee is a condition of funding and calls for particular professional practice in the field.
