ABSTRACT

This chapter documents the emergence of an innovative online repository of successful applications submitted for ethical approval and how and why the repository moved from being hosted by the University of Otago in New Zealand to the University of Oxford in England with the help of the UK’s Social Research Association (SRA), the professional membership body for the UK’s social researchers. The Social Research Association saw potential in the New Zealand database moving to a larger catchment in Europe and expanding its brief to encompass a array of epistemologies wider than solely qualitative research. Additionally, the SRA was innovative in its desire to include in the database ethics applications that were both approved and unapproved.
