ABSTRACT
Immigrants have long encountered unique challenges in securing a decent home and a suitable living environment in the U.S. Of course, immigrants are members of groups that are protected under the Fair Housing Act. Recent debates over immigration policies have increased the complexity of these issues. Paradoxically, seemingly progressive “smart growth” and “sustainable development” policies have often adversely affected housing opportunities in rural California communities and other immigrant enclaves. How we treat immigrants in the nation’s housing market will go a long way toward determining their life chances generally in their new home.
