ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the importance of academic integration into and through higher education. It examines academic integration and positions it as a conceptual tool that can be used to engage a diverse population of learners meaningfully, helping them to establish a stronger connection to their educational experience. The chapter argues that the development of academic skills as part of wider academic practice is a fundamental building block of learner engagement and integration within higher education. It presents a range of practical examples to illustrate some of the different ways that learning and assessment can be designed to build students' skills and confidence, and importantly help them 'understand the rules' of academia. The chapter explores how one knows if a student is academically integrated. Empowering students to drive learning forward enables them to play an active role as co-creators of learning and as agents for change, working in partnership with tutors as well as with peers.
