The Mosaic 1
In this chapter, we read about the artistic process behind the development of Edith’s subway mosaic, which is a permanent fixture at the Spring Street Subway Station (for the E and C subway lines). In Katherine Williams’ chapter (which precedes this one), we read about how an art piece can suggest new forms and new explorations. Now, in Edith’s chapter, she describes the process. We learn a bit of the steps that an artist goes through to learn a new modality in order to realize a creative dream. We learn about the offering of interest and pleasure in the subways where people are usually pressured, impatient, and bored, and how this gave Edith a sense of having fulfilled her function as an artist.
