Edith Kramer's Influence on the Development of Medical Art Therapy

WithIrene Rosner David

Edith Kramer had been unaware of art therapy’s applicability with the physically ill and disabled, but she became influential in medical art therapy with her insightful, psychoanalytic pictorial analyses of patients’ artwork. This chapter describes Edith’s receptivity to learning from a student experienced when working in a medical setting, and the uncanny role reversal of mentors. Some years later, she herself was hospitalized which reinforced her appreciation of the value of art therapy in coping with the impairment, dependency, and the need for adaptation.
