ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the major moral problems and ethical issues in China’s media since “Reform and Opening Up” in 1978. Four moral problems in the profession are prominent: paid news, deception, cruelty in tragedy, and excessive sexuality. Five ethical issues the Chinese news media share to varying degrees with the global news media: using undercover practices and technologies, saving lives or reporting first, press freedom versus fair trial, news sources, and violence in the media. It is hoped that the new generation of journalists will be able to resolve these moral and ethical challenges.
