ABSTRACT
The digital era has created uncertainty about the need for journalism. Here I argue that technology brought about a paradigm shift for mass communication which resulted in a change in conventions and expectations for journalism, along with other types of communication. Despite this and other historical paradigm shifts, journalism is needed to be a trusted purveyor of balanced, accurate, relevant, and complete information that is needed by citizens for self-governance.
