England’s ‘Biblical’ Prophets, 1642–60

ByAchsah Guibbory

In exploring the role of religion, I am interested in the man or woman who rises up in a particular society or faith community, who claims (and is thought by some) to have a special connection with God and a mission to deliver a divine message. This chapter will examine the identity and role of the prophet as articulated in the writings of self-identified prophets during the English revolution, when prophecy in England flourished and was viewed by many as a disturbing presence in society.
