Reconstructing biodiversity for tourism development: ethnographic accounts from a World Heritage Site in the making

ByCARSTEN WERGIN

There are more than 1000 World Heritage Sites (WHS) listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). This chapter is about a site whose developers aim for it to become one. It will present parts of the particular rules and regulations as well as discuss the discursive practices that led to the reinvention of Rodrigues Island, a dependency of the Republic of Mauritius in the southwest Indian Ocean, for sustainable development based on tourist promotion.
