ABSTRACT

In 2007, publication of Alonzo C. Addison’s Disappearing World dramatically illustrated the human and natural threats posed to World Heritage Sites (WHSs) around the world. In a number of cases Addison cited tourism-related factors that threatened WHS archaeological and architectural ensembles (Addison 2007). While technical specialists will be called upon to implement more sustainable practices at these sites, historians offer important insight regarding the rehabilitation of such sites.
