ABSTRACT
What does the world need from its universities? This book began with Susan Durber outlining some of the issues the world faces. Subsequent chapters developed various points she made and suggested ways in which universities might help in facing the issues identifi ed. This chapter draws together and builds on earlier chapters to argue society faces challenges universities can and should engage with as part of being a university. It further argues that, as universities engage, they should seek the good of society and individuals. Sadly, present changes in the higher education policy regime in England and elsewhere, discussed by Peter Scott and others, risk hindering rather than supporting universities in such work.
