What I intend to say in this piece is really no more than a statement of the obvious. But I think such statements sometimes need making, as it is one thing for something to be obvious, another for it to be recognised and accepted as such. Furthermore, statements of the obvious can have practical consequences: I am thinking here of the story of the emperor’s new clothes.
