ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the spatial patterns of the urban settlements in peripheral region of Delhi. The National Capital Region (NCR) portrays a unique development plan, and as a balanced developmental strategy, setup of NCR offers an innovative framework for the redistribution of population and economic activities from its core capital area to designated peripheral region. The report of National Commission on Urbanization (NCOU) also identified the NCR as one of Special Priority Urbanization Regions (SPUR), distinctive for its "integrated development" approach. Concepts or terminologies such as monocentricity and polycentricity, even conditions "beyond" polycentricity as a research topic and as a normative planning tool gained increasing visibility in academic and planning literature, particularly in Europe and North America in recent years. Polycentric Urban Region (PUR), at inter-urban scale, gained attention both from perspectives of academic studies and strategic planning tool, and normative arguments for "potentialities of a regional planning approach" in peripheral regions gained ground.
