Sustainability in the Library – ‘Green’ Issues
One of the more recent issues that is impacting on the design and functioning of university libraries is sustainability. This chapter, based on a literature search on the topic, provides an introduction to sustainability and green issues for university libraries; it draws mainly on circumstances in the United Kingdom, but also includes examples from elsewhere. It is intended that these will serve as examples of the kind of issues involved and how they are being addressed in this developing ¿eld. Others, too, af¿rm that this is a relatively new topic for libraries. Hurt and Findley (2011), for example, in a recently published encyclopedia article on library architecture and design, note that ‘[a] fairly recent trend in library architecture and interior design has been the emphasis on sustainable design, also known as greening the library’.
