ABSTRACT

The experiences of migration presented are various and the factors impacting on how decisions are made to migrate, to migrate onwards, to stay or to return may depend on an individual's personal situation before, during and after migration. Discourse relating to the migration of persons to and through the Mediterranean Region sometimes characterises migrants merely as part of a phenomenon, a theory or a system. Changing conditions in the Mediterranean Region can sometimes affect migration decision-making of those travelling from Sub-Saharan Africa. The Mediterranean Region has seen a period of much change in terms of economic conditions on all sides of the sea. While most people do not migrate, travelling is common among people and much more likely when conditions are considered to be more comfortable in one place than another. Recent years have seen conditions in the Mediterranean change through a number of different dimensions.
