The Prodigal Spirit and Church Growth
Pentecostal and Charismatic churches tend to adopt an implicit Spirit Christology that suggests that all human beings are intended to do the same. In the parable of the Prodigal in Lukes gospel, the line for this son of mine was dead and is alive again makes an intriguing connection to the death and resurrection of the Son. The Spirit brings transformation, both drawing out human potential and healing the damaged tissues of emotional or physical hurt. This of course is an important dynamic of church growth. The work of the Holy Spirit is to bring all of creation, fully restored and healed, to its fulfilment. The work of the Holy Spirit is to bring all of creation, fully restored and healed, to its fulfilment. The church is sent by Jesus, yet created and constituted by the Holy Spirit. Mission is part of Gods nature even if there were no creation at all, even if that creation had not fallen.
