ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the problems and potential barriers to the introduction of environmental management systems (EMS) in accommodation establishments in Slovenia. It presents the case study 'Slovenia Green', which is based on research into Slovene hotels and their progress in the implementation of environmental management practices and the implementation of the environmental management system accredited though the Eco-Flower scheme. The globalisation of society has led to the evolution of a new business paradigm. The main doctrine of the current Tourism Strategy is the development of niche tourism and stimulation of tourism development in less developed rural regions. In Europe, the highest level of eco-consciousness is found in the northern countries, like Scandinavia, Netherlands and Germany. The chapter concludes that the managers expected to pay more expenses than they could expect to gain through financial benefits arising from eco-label certification.
