ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two aspects to the problem of the virtual representations of time in information systems in archaeology and history. It describes the need for an integration of humanities information systems from the point of view research politics. The concept of 'e-Humanities' has enjoyed considerable prominence of late, partly as a result of the general spreading of information technology, but partly also as the result of dedicated initiatives of national funding bodies. The chapter presents a short introduction to the various technical aspects of representing time. The representation of time is discussed quite extensively in the literature relating to the use of geographic information system (GIS)-based approaches to archaeological information systems. The chapter looks at the current interoperability of cultural heritage information systems in general. Digital resources in the cultural heritage world are currently moving quickly beyond the digitization of individual objects to the systematic conversion of collections.
