ABSTRACT

The application of the methods and findings of the various disciplines that fall under the umbrella term "cognitive science" to religious beliefs and practices. These constitutes one of the most promising approaches to understanding the religious mind and establishes a new front on the religion or science debates. It is clear that cognitive science has important implications for both theists and atheists. In terms of the critics of religion, the findings of Cognitive Science of Religion (CSR) change the nature of such criticism. Religious beliefs may just make sense to a person, and more significantly allow a person to make sense of their lives and the world they live in. In this domain, theology may speak just as rightfully as science or logic, and it is within this domain that arguments for the compatibility of a biological understanding of religion and a faith-based understanding may be most compelling.
