ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how teenagers use the information and communications technology (ICTs) to seek information about health, how they assess a health source as reliable, how they bear and cope with somatic symptoms such as headaches, simple or severe acne and weight variations. It surveys what it means for teenagers to be in a good physical condition, including their habits regarding self-medication, nutrition, physical activity, weight control, body image, and how they communicate with respect to the above-mentioned health-issues through ICT. The Internet is a handy' source for teenagers, as it protects them from the costs of not following the social norms, especially when they seek information about their sexual life. Teenagers are exposed to health warning messages accidentally, by change, when accessing certain Internet websites or when connecting to social networks. The chapter explores how much parents, peers, teachers, celebrities and media exposure influence in adopting certain healthy or unhealthy behaviours.
