Ubuntu is Utopia: The Individual and the Community in the Work of Nelson Mandela

In this chapter we examine the nature of utopia in the work of Nelson Mandela, paying particular attention to the way that Ubuntu and the African context shape his outlook on the relationship between the individual and the community. Here, utopia encompasses different aspects of life, including land, economics, politics, and culture. His utopian vision, in brief, attempts to capture how life ought to be lived outside of capitalism/racism and other forms of oppression, especially in South Africa.
