ABSTRACT
Although there is a growing interest in the history of the military-religious orders, 2 agreement has yet to be reached on their nature. This paper, dedicated to Dr Anthony Luttrell, is in part my response to his challenge to provide a convincing definition of them. I argue here that they are to be found in two forms, to which I give the names ‘Military Orders’ and ‘Christian Orders of Chivalry’.
