ABSTRACT

This chapter revolves around the notion of popular culture tourism as a potential booster and rejuvenation strategy for local economies. It aims to propose and elaborate a comprehensive analytic framework for the study of popular culture tourism in a local context. The phenomenon of popular culture tourism is increasingly gaining interest both in academia and in practice. As the interest for popular culture tourism as a cultural phenomenon and an economic activity is growing and its significance in local society develops, the need to understand popular culture tourism as a deeply rooted and integrated part of local development increases. The evolution of the popular culture tourism phenomenon provides information about path dependency and lock-in in the popular culture production system and hence, important information about, for example, the cultural sector's willingness to commercialize and past collaborations and knowledge-exchange. The chapter aims to bring new perspectives into the field of popular culture tourism.
