ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on one dimension of the resource nexus – land, and specifically land governance in the Global South. It examines how the resource nexus plays out in practice in different settings in the Global South in order to pull out some insights for incorporating the human dimensions into land governance within a nexus framework. The chapter outlines key global trends in land use and land-use change. It offers some thoughts on the potential (dis)benefits of the resource nexus in addressing some of the challenges facing land governance in the Global South. A challenge for the governance of land in the Global South is the development of an institutional context that incorporates not only issues of 'conventional' governance, but also the social and environmental aspects. The challenges facing land use in the Global South are dynamic and complex, encompassing interlinked environmental, all of which are shaped by the broader political and institutional contexts within which land is situated.
