ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the origins of the Papadopoulos model for culturally competent compassion and discusses its building blocks and main constructs. It proposes that whilst compassion is a universal notion, its understanding and enactment can vary from culture to culture. The reader is encouraged to reflect on and apply the four constructs of the model. The chapter also introduces three significant applications of the Papadopoulos model of culturally competent compassion: (a) the innovative massive open online course method of learning about culturally competent compassion; (b) the first international survey on culturally competent compassion; and (c) some of the outputs of Intercultural Education of Nurses in Europe programme.
