ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses and demystifies the concept of play and identifies how play is conceptualized by adults and children; the right of the child to play. It considers how children learn through play and how this is used to meet adult agendas within education and other contexts. The chapter clarifies the concept of play as defined by different groups and to identify the breadth of activity encompassed by the concept. It provides a brief historical context of pioneers in play and explores contemporary views on play. The chapter also considers how play contributes to development and learning. It also explores the importance of an enabling environment which promotes risk, challenge and decision-making. The chapter explains the role of the adult in providing for and supporting children's play. Children's life experiences differ according to history, culture, geography and economic status, and views on children's play are influenced by all of these factors.
