ABSTRACT

Most discussions on the subject of social policy identify democracy as a vital part of the social development universe. Identifying how democracy is enhanced or achieved is often neglected, beyond simply stating that it is important and part of the formal political process. There are many venues for engaging the populace at both the national and local levels in the development and provision of social policy, thereby strengthening the democratic foundation. The recent advancement of social media in political campaigns by all parties demonstrates clearly the developing and deepening relationship between those who govern and those who are governed. Public involvement in governance does not just happen at election time any longer, but is an ongoing dialogue given the widespread use of social media. Public involvement in the social policy development process is a rich venue for advancing democracy and in creating a sense of inclusion in community and national development.
