ABSTRACT

In this chapter the author shares his own moral vision statement with students as a model before they write theirs. The "moral vision statement" assignment is inspired by linguist George Lakoff's recommendations to have activists articulate their moral vision for the kind of world they want to create, so they can explain what they are for creating in the long term and not just what they are against in the short term. To provide an example for the format, he has posted his vision statement under "resources for moral vision statement homework". During the last class, he has the students bring in a hardcopy of their vision statement and do a "pair and share", where students swap statements, read, and discuss. Students can get overwhelmed with all the negative information they learn about the state of environmental crisis. During the class discussion, they also benefit from learning what other students' visions are and hearing a diversity of ideas.
