ABSTRACT

This chapter describes selected philosophical frameworks and educational policies that shape early childcare and education in modern India. It offers a glimpse into the state of early childcare and education in India and the forces that have shaped its evolution. Family structure, religion, economic priorities, cultural imperatives, and globalization all shape early childhood care and education in India and are responsible for three key trends in the education of young children. Those are the traditional influences grounded in faith and culture; contemporary perspectives aligned with global economies; and an emerging trend of revival and restructuring of educational practices that seek to reinforce traditional faith-based practices in harmony with contemporary perspectives. Lalan Palan or indulgence marks socialization during infancy and early childhood, which is followed by a strong emphasis on Shiksha, or education. Every state and union territory of India has established early childhood centers called Anganwadis or sheltered courtyards.
