ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book considers the principles underpinning work with children under three years and their families. It summarises the research project and shares case studies of the families and workers that participated in the project. The book outlines the development of an observational tool, 'consultancy observations', for use when practitioners in Early Years settings have concerns about particular children in their care. It explains how through thinking, reflecting and talking together, staff behaviours change in subtle ways, thus changing the child's experience for the better. The book also explains the 'Being Two' project, which promotes exemplary early education and childcare for two-year-olds through the development of a national network of Associate Centres. It describes the Growing Together group, which is a group for parents to attend with children aged from birth to three years.
