ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes the term nonbinary which describes a myriad of individuals who fall in this identified subset of gender identity; however, there are several other terms that nonbinary people might use to describe their identities. Transgender and nonbinary people have the capacity to cultivate and maintain satisfying intimate and romantic relationships. While transgender and nonbinary people are disproportionately targeted in hate crime related violence, they also face discrimination of other kinds. Only 20 states in the United States have legislation that prohibit employment and housing discrimination against transgender and nonbinary individuals. Legally and medically transitioning is often seen as a privilege in trans communities because many transgender people do not have access to services that would allow them to medically transition. Social and medical transitioning may be part of the process of passing for some transgender individuals, but not necessarily for all.
