ABSTRACT

Migratory flows to Europe have brought about considerable changes in the affected countries. Endless doctrinal discussions have thus ensued on the reception and integration strategies each of these countries has adopted and on the 'models' of regulation and immigration policy that may be inferred from national experiences. Some ambiguities in Italian migration policy, despite continuity with the broader European perspective, thus fit within this framework. Generally speaking, after an initial phase of 'lawless tolerance' of immigration, Italy has also slowly begun to go down the 'Fortress Europe' path. Therefore, the arrival of women with their own independent migration plan was another unique element on the Italian migration landscape, taking shape at a time when the welfare system and gender relations were headed towards a slow but inexorable process of change. The chapter also presents some closing concepts discussed in this book.
