ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the legal education system in Taiwan, the challenges it is facing, and efforts that have been carried out at National Taiwan University College of Law to address the need for reforming the status quo. It deals with a call that all law schools in Taiwan take a greater role in reforming Taiwan’s legal education and training the next generation of Taiwan’s legal professionals to a better standard of competence. Globalization has profound influences on legal education in many places around the world, including Taiwan. Law schools in Taiwan play a minor role in training practical skills of law students because Taiwan’s legal education places its primary emphasis on doctrinal teaching rather than practical training. In Taiwan, overemphasizing doctrinal teaching while ignoring the practical training of law students is one of the primary concerns driving the pressures to reform the legal education system.
