ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a number of links to invaluable tools for creating and sustaining growth mindsets. Moreover, many teachers have never been taught how to interact with students in ways that build and sustain the effective effort that will serve students well into their adult lives as they are presented with an increasing number of challenges. For this reason, the chapter discusses effective effort—what it is and what it is not, the strategies that cultivate such effort, and the improved learning outcomes students experience when they learn how to use their effort effectively. A fixed mindset response to challenge impedes learning outcomes and the motivation to learn, whereas a growth mindset response allows students to reach higher, achieve more, and remain motivated to learn, even when solutions are not immediately available. Educators can have an enormous influence on students' motivation simply through the messages they communicate.
