An Army Reservist’s story*
This chapter is an account of the author’s transition from being a student and part-time Army Reservist to deployment into a Regular Army platoon frontline in Helmand, Afghanistan. Changes in states of mind before, during and after active service are described. The consequences of rapid demobilisation back to the UK and emerging psycho-social problems are presented. Obstacles to seeking help are discussed before describing treatment received for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the particular role that art therapy played in recovery. Art therapy is seen as challenging but rewarding, acting as a catalyst for a new career pathway.
